I just picked up an 01 KX125 a few weeks ago that had low compression. The cylinder was in pretty good condition and I was able to throw in a new Wiseco top-end kit into it with a new piston and ring. It had great compression and was able to get the bike running with it in. It was a bit hard to g. Screw the compression tester in, hold the throttle wide open and give it about 7 kicks. Make sure your gauge is working, I tested mine the other day on my kx 80 and the gauge said 65. Then I tested it with a new gauge and it said 155psi. Compression gauges very a lot, so just one reading in the absence of any reference point is pretty useless. I ONLY use compression gauges to look for consistency across cylinders in multi-cylinder engines. All the writing that went into the responses to this thread probably took longer than it takes to do a top-end on a 125 sx.

it only takes on good scratch and your compression is gone. the bigger the scratch/gouge the less compression... you could have thrown some oil in the cylinder before pulling it down and rechecked your compresion (oil will seal ring to wall MOST of the time) and bring the compression up a bit (just like ya check a 4-stroke) and The compression could be anywhere in the range of 150 to 200 and be OK, depending on the atmospheric conditions, the test guage, and the bike.
